DIFC was established in 2004 as a 110-hectare financial free zone with its own common-law courts and regulator. It closed 2025 with 8,844 active registered companies after 1,924 new registrations, a workforce of more than 50,000 and revenue of AED 2.13 billion. The register includes over 500 wealth and asset managers and more than 290 banks and financial markets firms. A planned Za'abeel District expansion covers over 1.5 sq km.
