Nakheel began reclamation in 2001, with land and infrastructure in place by 2004 and the first residents arriving in 2007. The island covers 560 hectares across a trunk, 17 fronds and a breakwater Crescent, and is home to roughly 25,000 people. Landmarks include Atlantis The Palm, Nakheel Mall, The Palm Tower and Al Ittihad Park. The Palm Monorail, the Middle East's first, opened in 2009 and connects to the Dubai Tram.
